VOLUNTEERS FROM THE Nomadic Litterpickers gathered at the end of February to carry out a community litter-picking event along the Kennet & Avon Canal in Bathampton.

Following the success of their inaugural cleanup in Trowbridge, the growing group continued its commitment to protecting the waterways while welcoming participation from local residents and visitors.

Lucy Wishart, a spokesperson for the Nomadic Litterpickers, explained:

“Our waterways connect us all. Bathampton is a beautiful stretch of canal, and we feel a shared responsibility to help look after it. These spaces belong to everyone—boaters, walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers—so it’s important they remain clean and welcoming.

“It’s not just about clearing up rubbish, it’s about community. When people come together like this, they not only improve the environment but also strengthen connections and civic pride.”

LitterPickers2Wide range of waste

Volunteers collected a wide range of waste, including plastic bottles, cans, food packaging, and other debris that had accumulated along the towpath and water’s edge.

Volunteer Charlie Niklass, who took part in the cleanup, added:

“The canal is a shared space that so many people rely on and enjoy. It’s not about perfection—it’s about care, consistency, and community.”

Pamela Smith, Chair of the National Bargee Travellers Association, welcomed the initiative:

Caring for the environment

“Liveaboard boaters often clean up litter wherever they moor—it’s part of caring for the environment we all rely on. Nomadic Litterpickers demonstrates the positive contribution of the Bargee Travellers community, particularly at a time when policy changes and licensing reviews by Canal & River Trust may affect their way of life.”

The Nomadic Litterpickers plan to organise further cleanup events along the Kennet & Avon Canal in the coming months and encourage others to get involved in protecting Britain’s waterways.
