Left on the mud

THE boaters who moored above Grove Lock (28) on the Grand Union Canal at Leighton Buzzard found themselves rolling out of their beds, as the pound emptied during Wednesday night.

Others who slept on, found their boats on the bottom in the morning, with just a stream running down the middle, Alan Tilbury reports.

Carry windless

One boater alerted the emergency services in the early hours, with the fire people and police attending. The fire crews carry a windlass for such emergencies, and were able to allow water back in the pound.

It is understood there were 30 boats on the moorings, but the cause is not known, and the local report that gates were left open, is of course impossible.
