Co-operative's hydro electric scheme

A LOCAL cooperative in Abingdon has been granted permission to install a hydro electric plant in the Abbey Stream as it flows into the Thames.

Many people believe this method of generating 'green' power is preferable to the massive unsightly wind turbines, as there is little in view above the water level, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Two generators

Vale of White Horse District Council members gave planning permission this week to allow the cooperative Abingdon Hydro to install two generators by the weir at Abingdon.

Shares in the scheme, that will create power for the national grid, are being offered to the public.  The group said the water turbines, which have a lifespan of around 40 years, could generate about £120,000 annually.
