New lock gates for K&A

Published: Thursday, 17 November 2011

WINTER work on the Kennet & Avon Canal has included the replacement of 16 sets of lock gates during the period up to Christmas.

British Waterways have begun their winter works on the waterway at Crofton on locks 55, 58, 59 and 60, craning out the gates.

Repairs

While the locks are drained for the removal, repairs will be carried out on the locks' brickwork and mechanisms. New gates that have been produced in British Waterways' workshop will then be installed.

The eight week project will be completed before Christmas and will cost £400,000. These sets of gates are four of the 16 that will be replaced on the Kennet & Avon Canal this winter.

Public seeing the work

British Waterways now has a policy of allowing the public to see its work, and so is inviting the public to take the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the works at Crofton as part of a national winter works open day campaign.

The Kennet & Avon Canal will be hosting two Open Days, the first at Crofton Locks on Saturday 10th December and the second at Hungerford Marsh Lock on Saturday 21st January. Other such Open Days are taking place across England and Wales between November and March.
