Boats getting through the summit pound

Published: Wednesday, 27 December 2017

BOATS are managing to get through the summit pound of the Grand Union Canal, Howard Clarke reports.

It is assisted however, he telling us that when a broad beam arrived at Marsworth Top Lock on Christmas Day the crew had to wait for the locks to be opened at 11am as advertised.

Running water down

The two short pounds were both low, but the CaRT man started running water from the summit pound, with the broad beam preparing to move at 11.39 and descend the flight.

Howard tells us that heavy rain overnight has made a big difference to the levels, with the summit pound now only two inches from the overflow weir on Aylesbury Arm. Marsworth, Startops and Tringford reservoirs levels noticeably higher. Heavy rain again tonight will continue to improve the situation.
