Ducks Race raises £2,500

A DUCK Race held at Aqueduct Marina on the Middlewich Branch raised £2,500 for St Luke's (Cheshire) Hospice.

The race started at 1.00 pm when the ducks were tipped into the canal. They gently drifted eastwards along the canal with boats going past at 4 mph! The finish line was about 100 yards further along and 30 minutes later there was almost a sprint finish.

Met ducks head-on

The huge crowd of duck sponsors cheered their ducks towards the line but just as the finish line was in sight, Maurice Ward on NB Emelia Romagna returning from a weekend out on his boat, met the ducks head-on. He was both cheered and booed in equal measure!

The overall winner on the day was St Luke's. The first placed duck was no. 781 sponsored by Michelle Hallett.

Total boosted

Nearly 1,000 ducks were sold at £2.50 each and the total was boosted by extra donations to over £2,500. Clare Dale, Events Fundraiser for St Luke's, exclaimed:

"On behalf of the Trustees, patients and staff at St Luke's (Cheshire) Hospice, thank you to all Aqueduct Marina staff and moorers for supporting our first ever duck race at the marina. We have received plenty of positive comments about the day and raised in excess of £2,500 for our very special hospice. You were all a huge help and made us very welcome on the day. A special thank you goes to the person who ordered the sun!"
