Boats required!

Published: Wednesday, 05 February 2014

EVERY year on the first Saturday in July a half marathon race is organised between Wolverhampton and Birmingham with runners following the course of the Birmingham Canal Main Line, writes Mick Fitzgibbons.

Boats are moored at intervals to provide a refreshment service for the runners, with tap water and mineral water handed out to runners as they pass.

Boat every mile

This year (Saturday 5th July) it is hoped to provide a boat every mile and to this end owners of boats are invited to assist—with historic and working boats being especially welcomed.

Water containers and disposable cups and a bench plus rubbish sacks are provided by arrangement the day before, and boats have to be in position from about 10am to 4pm. A crew of two or more is ideal as it is hectic work for a few hours handing out water or diluted energy drink and collecting up the cups. A fee is paid.
