L&L locks finally repaired

LEAKING for many years, and the subject of many complaints from boaters, the lock gates at both Bank Newton and Gargrave on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal are being repaired.

Work is now well underway, at a cost if £250,000, that Canal & River Trust describe as a major restoration project, with the work to be completed in early March in time for the start of the boating season, though of course the work is part of its winter maintenance.

Poor condition

The top photograph shows the condition of the gates on Gargrave Top Lock, this taken some four years ago, whilst the photograph below shows the condition of Bank Newton Lock, the photograph taken at the same time.

These are just two of the many photographs sent in by boaters that show the poor condition of a great many of the locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

The Trust is using the work as publicity to get people to donate £3 as part of its 'Friends' campaign.
