Visiting the Ashby

BOATER visiting the Ashby Canal and hoping to stock up at Stoke Golding will be disappointed to find that the village shop has closed, Ian Reid writes.

The adjacent Post Office is still going though and sells stationery, cards and giftware, but no food.

Not quite lost

All is not quite lost; there are still two farm shops, one alongside the canal and the other a 100yds down the road from Ashby Boats wharf. The newsagent from Higham on the Hill also visits the Stoke Golding Club in Hinckley Road from 9:30 to 11:00 every morning.

He usually has a few bottles of milk and some eggs with him, plus other things that 'Stokers' have asked for and which he can squeeze into his car.

The three pubs are still going strong!
