Email: Objection to donation

I can see the reason as explained by John Dodwell for the appeal for funds for repairing the breach on the Trent & Mersey Canal, for it will leave more money for other things.

But I do object to the Trent & Mersey Canal Society giving £1,000 of its members' money to the appeal.  Like my wife, I should think most of its members are boaters, and surely they give enough already.

She is adamant that she will not renew her membership when it comes up, for though she expected her money to go towards the waterway, it was for facilities for boaters and to help with work parties cutting back vegetation etc., not to repair a breach that surely is a matter for the owners.

If a railway embankment gave way, would the railway company expect its passengers to cough up?
