Derelict canal dredged

THE unconnected Cromford Canal, most of which is derelict is to have just over a mile dredged.

It is Derbyshire County Council that is to spend £300,000 to dredge a 1.3 mile section between the canal's terminus (pictured) at Cromford and Leawood Pump House.

Long term benefits

Being part of a World Heritage site a spokesman for the council related that it would bring 'long-term benefits to the area'.

Councillor Simon Spencer stated:

"Tourism is an integral part of the Derbyshire Dales economy and the work will enable boats to be run on the canal for the first time in many years.

"Increasing visitor numbers to the area will create jobs and opportunities for local businesses."

Of course this is ridiculous as there is only a small section of the unconnected canal in water, and will hardly get any boats.
