Daventry application submitted

REGULAR readers will recollect the story of the proposed Daventry Arm, and its 'on' and 'off' situation.

This is the plan to build an arm into Daventry off the Grand Union Canal so that a basin can be constructed in the town as a centre piece for development, even though the plan is against the wishes of the locals.

Concerned

A poll of residents of Daventry last year when the council put the matter of the new waterway to the vote, resulted in 2,300 against and 721 in favour, showing that many rate-payers were concerned at the colossal cost that they could possibly end up paying.

Notwithstanding the vote, an application for the 1.6 mile long waterway has been submitted by Daventry District Council to the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.

The latest estimated cost is £11 millions, that will include seven locks, with at one time a wheel being considered. Its junction with the Grand Union Canal is proposed half a mile East of Braunston Tunnel.
