WORK IS AT PRESENT going ahead with work on the waterway through Swindon.

Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has announced work to repair eroding banks in Swindon that will restore the integrity of the eroding banks.

WiltsBerksGiven a grant

With the trust telling that the project is the first time repairs have been made to the canal in the area for more than 25 years, and was able to begin the repairs after being given a grant for the materials by Swindon Borough Council.

The work is being carried out by volunteers, with the trust admitting that progress will be slow, but would be quicker if more volunteers came forward.

The pound was last restored by the trust in 1999, thanks to a grant from the Millennium Commission. But since then the banks have slowly been eroding, and this has now threatened to intrude on the towpath, so it welcomes the grant from Swindon Borough Council. Owned by council

The council owns the canal and towpath. A member of the trust tells that volunteers are welcome:

“But we are few, so progress will be slow. If you care to join us and have fun getting wet & muddy, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.—you'd be warmly welcomed!”
