Gate failure on Rochdale Canal

THE failure of the gates at Slaters Lowest Lock (76) at Miles Platting in Manchester has caused a further part of the Rochdale Canal to be closed on Monday.

Both the tail gate quoins and cills have failed, allowing too much leakage from the lock so that it is unable to be worked as it will not fill and thus allow it to be used, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Four weeks

An emergency stoppage is required, including draining the pound, that we are told will take four weeks to complete, beginning on Monday 23rd February until 27th of March.

However, should the work progress better than expected it is possible the waterway will be open before this date.

At the moment there are a number of stoppages on the Rochdale Canal, but it is hoped all will be completed during March
