Swing bridge for the Oxford?

THE Oxford Canal—the waterway of lift bridges—is likely to get a swing bridge in the new plans for the development of Castlemill Boatyard.

The £20 millions development, that latest in a series of plans with the old boatyard is to include a swing bridge just above the lock that leads onto the Thames at Castlemill, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Near the lock

However, the site of the proposed swing bridge so near to the lock is not to Canal & River Trust's liking as it raised safety issues, and a fixed bridge has been suggested by the owner of Walton Bridge moorings.

The position of the swing bridge has already been moved owing to objections from locals, and looks as though it could be replaced by a fixed bridge, that of course will be to boaters liking.
