Dutton has leaked since being repaired

IF THE locals living near the breach on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Dutton are to be believed it has been leaking ever since it was repaired in 2012.

Locals have told narrowboatworld that ever since the £2.5 millions repair was completed in September 2012, is has been leaking where the repair meets the original bank, with regular walkers seeing water flowing out of the canal.

Facebook reports

There are also reports on Facebook from people saying that the canal at Dutton has leaked at one end of the original repair ever since it was reopened after the breach, which suggests a bodged repair, as was reported in narrowboatworld, yet Canal & River Trust's Vince Moran is on record as stating that CaRT was not aware of any leaks at the time of the breach.

However, the Trust has now told that it will start work on the failure at Dutton during the first week of January, and expects to have it repaired by early Spring, with a definite date being given once the extent of repair is known.

Compensation

As to whether any arrangement has been made to compensate for the original repair, either by fixing it or giving compensation, is not known, yet it would seem from all accounts that compensation is due.

No effort is being made to launch an appeal for the new repair, as the original appeal raised less than 1% of money needed.
