Weevils to clear Huddersfield Broad

SUCH is the growth of the Azolla Weed on the Huddersfield Broad Canal, that Canal & River Trust has released around  4,000 weed munching weevils to control it.

This is not the first time weevils have been released in a waterway, as they are well known for getting rid of the very quick growing weed.

Light and oxygen

However, it has not been done to save boats having problems with the weed, but to make sure the thick mat does not reduce light and oxygen levels in the water, a spokesman for the Trust relates.

The weevils feed exclusively on the weed and so native species are not damaged.
