Tall ship on the Sharpness

Published: Sunday, 10 August 2014

JOINING the Tall Ships even at Gloucester, there will be a particularly tall sailing ship travelling along the Sharpness Canal tomorrow, Monday.

It will be leaving Purton around 9am and it is expected to take four hours to reach Gloucester, though this is subject to change, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Navigation a problem

Such is the size of the ship that there are 'pinch points', particularly at Saul Junction and into Gloucester were navigation could be a problem owing to bends and bridges, though the main length of the waterway should pose little problem, as the bridges will be manned during its passage. In view of this tall ship navigating the waterway, Canal & River Trust is asking boaters to take particular care where they moor along the canal and where possible, to avoid these areas. Boaters are also advised that the ship may cause a significant wash and should consider this when tying up.

Priority

The size, manoeuvrability and stopping distance of the tall ship means it is important that its passage is not obstructed, particularly on the approach to the bridges, so boaters are asked to give it priority at all times

Sainsbury's visitor moorings will be closed from 10.30am until 2pm on the day whilst the ship navigates into Gloucester Docks.
