The Objects of the Articles is an interesting exposé of what Canal & River Trust (CaRT) actually is!

I note that they only 'have' to maintain freight carrying waterways. Perhaps that could be why there is, with the exception of a few brave narrowboat enthusiasts, only one commercial barge still operating on CaRT waters—using just two canals and possibly due to be stopped by EU legislation at the end of December.

Presumably next year the whole system will become a housing estate—and the trustees will be able to retire to their private islands in the Caribbean.
