THERE was panic at the disused Cotswold Canals at Dudbridge when a grenade was discovered in the middle of the towpath.

The waterway that is in the process of being restored near Stroud, was being dredged, when the grenade was unearthed and landed on the towpath, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Bomb disposal people

The workers kept well clear and contacted the police who in turn contacted the bomb disposal people.  In the meantime the area was of course cordoned off to keep people away.

The Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal team, set up a base at Marling School's sports field, then dealt with the grenade in a contained explosion. It was the type issued to the Home Guard in the Second World War.
