Another Gloucester failure

Published: Thursday, 02 May 2013

THERE have been many attempts to convert the warehouses at Gloucester Docks and even build a new shopping precinct, but all seem to meet with failure.

The latest is the conversion into apartments, shops and restaurants of the listed Victorian Lock Warehouse, converted by local developer Melt Homes.

No takers

The owner has now applied for planning permission to use the ground floor of the building for offices as he has not managed to to attract a single shop or restaurant into any of the units. There is very slow take-up of the apartments too, with Knight Frank advertising two and three bedroom dwellings.

The worst of the failures was when British Waterways wrote off a massive £33 millions of its 'investment' in Gloucester Quays.  Many tenants of the various shopping facilities at the docks have pulled out through lack of business.  It is accepted that the docks are somewhat cut-off from the rest of the city, and will never prove a successful trading centre.
