Canal length for £1

Published: Thursday, 21 March 2013

A LENGTH of the disused canal in Cannock has been bought by the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust for just £1, to enable it to continue with its restoration of the waterways.

Permission to sell the canal is expected to be given today (Thursday) by Cannock Chase Council, that purchased the land from British Waterways in the 60s.  It is considered to have no market value other that as a waterway.

Staffs & Worcs

This length is part of the Hatherton Canal, that stretches from the North of Bloxwich, passing the South of Cannock to eventually join the Staffs & Worcs at Calf Heath.

Once again the Trust is looking to the Heritage Lottery Fund for money to complete the short section to the existing arm at Calf Heath as part of the long term project.

Though at present it is not expected that the whole waterway will be completed by 2020, it is hoped to get sections in water before that date, but of course depends on funding.
