Illegal fishing in Nene

THE Peterborough and District Angling Association members are worried that their sport is in danger as many people were regularly taking fish home to eat.

Though in the old days that was what people did—take fish to eat, it is now illegal, as it depletes stocks, with the association worried that the amount of fish being removed is causing significant damage to stocks, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Regularly taking fish

A member of the association had first noticed the problem on the Nene near Peterborough about 18 months ago, but there are now many people regularly taking fish for the table.

It seems that people from Eastern Europe are mostly responsible, but of course this is what is done in their countries—fish, rabbits and pheasants are a source of food.

An angling shop owner has produced posters in various languages, stating the 'catch and release' law', admitting they think it's bizarre that we would put the fish back.
