Do not have a clue

REFERRING to the lack of boater access to Henhurst Lock at Wigan by the building of the bridge, one boater there at the time of its building is convinced  British Waterways 'do not have a clue how our canals operate'.

This lock is one we regularly have to pass through every time we decide to go cruising, and I agree most heartily with John Lloyd, [Still no tail bridge 02/07/12] writes John Hall.

Ridiculous situation

On one occasion whilst working the lock, we encountered a workman who was involved in the reconstruction of Henhurst Bridge and amended surrounds to the lock, and as one would expect we commented on the ridiculous situation concerning this lock.

He informed us that whilst the work was being carried out, British Waterways were for ever visiting the site (I suppose they would since their office is well within a stones-throw from it!), and despite offering to provide access to the off-side of the lock, was refused permission to do so.

Clear indication

This would appear to be yet another very clear indication that British Waterways employees (office staff that is, the boys in blue would understand only too well how important all-round access is) do not have a clue how our canals operate, this is a very real safety issue as John points out, but must be much lower down the 'Priority List' than 'Second Ladders' in locks, and totally unnecessary bollards around lock-sides.
