Not a national treasure

At the moment I'm visiting friends in Kent, so being allowed to log on to the site and reading about the 98% lark, I asked them if they believed the canals a national treasure, writes James Henry.

None of the four did believe it, and to be perfectly honest even as a boater, neither do I. And it being succinctly pointed out to me that 'didn't you know, there are no canals in Kent', and two had never even seen one!

Hard to understand

I have now seen the report and you have quoted correctly, but the statement is very hard to understand. Down here in Kent, canals just do not feature so I can't see many with any interest whatsoever never mind them being regarded as a national treasure.
