Major canal development

THE peaceful stretch of the Stourbridge Canal near the town and in the town itself could soon be gone forever if the council's plans come to fruition.

The plans are for shops, homes, and hotel together with green spaces and visitor facilities both by the canal and the Stour, Alan Tilbury reveals.

The area around the canal wharf and bonded warehouse (pictured) on Canal Street, will see development alongside the existing industrial units with paths, and 'more facilities for barges'.

With problems in the past, it is thought that having building overlooking the canal would increase people's safety and encourage them to use it.

However, the council does not have the money for the proposed development, and so is looking for potential investors, and hopes for government funding.
