Working Coal Boat on the K&A

A NEW coal boat was launched on the Kennet & Avon Canal last month, by the Canal Carrying Company at Bradford on Avon, delivering coal and goods to boats and canal side households.

Named The Coalboat it will deliver coal, diesel, gas, wood, chandlery and household items over an area between Bath and the bottom of the Caen Hill flight at Devizes.

Straight onto boats

Skipper Will explained:

"We're very happy to become one of only a dozen or so working boats in the country keeping this canal carrying tradition alive. It's a very economical and environmentally friendly mode of transport and we deliver straight onto boats so owners don't have to travel miles to obtain their essential supplies.

"We know people rely on their winter fuel and our delivery round has been worked out very carefully so customers can rely on us to pass them regularly. Our bright yellow flags show where we are moored. We even have a Plan B ready to continue deliveries during any British Waterways restriction or if the canal freezes."

Purpose built

The boat was purpose built by canal boat builder Stuart Hodges at Victoria Wharf, Market Drayton, who commented:

"This is my 74th boat but it's always a pleasure to build a proper working boat. She's designed along traditional lines similar to the historic Fellows, Morton & Clayton's steamers like President. At 70ft long she can carry up to 20 tons of cargo in her fully covered hold. There is a fully fitted cabin at the stern with all mod cons including galley, central heating, toilet and shower room so Will can live comfortably.

The boat is based at Bradford on Avon Wharf. After loading at the wharf The CoalBoat made her first delivery to the Lock Inn at Bradford on Avon.
