Little hope for Weaver Bridge

THOUGH Tom Reynolds managed to get some activity about the repair to Sutton Swing Bridge on the Weaver, there still seems little hope.

A meeting was held in the House of Commons between Cheshire West and Chester Council, British Waterways, Weaver Valley MP Graham Evans and Frodsham Councillors to discuss the refurbishment of the bridge with a Press Release issued.

Shortfall of £2m

It was admitted that the bridge needs refurbishment and major re-strengthening work, but there is a shortfall of £2m, and that work could start if it was made available.

We are told that both British Waterways and the Council, who have shared responsibility for the repairs to the bridge, have committed to continuing the discussions whilst both sides look to see what other funding options may exist to bring forward its refurbishment.

Not found a solution

After the meeting at the House of Commons, Councillor Dawson stated:

"We have not yet found the solution but I do have a very much clearer appreciation of what the stumbling blocks are and I am pleased that both British Waterways and the Council are committed to exploring further options."

British Waterways Manager Wendy Capelle told that 'we're keen to achieve a resolution including agreeing how the shortfall of funding can be overcome. The refurbishment of the bridge remains high on British Waterways' agenda'.

Tom Reynolds

Of the results from the meeting Tom Reynolds wrote to the various people involved pointing out:

'When I heard today there was to be a Press Release relating to the Sutton Swing Bridge issue, I expected something quite specific and progressive.

After reading this Press Release I conclude that you've come back from your meeting with Graham Evans and British Waterways with nothing!'

Tom believes that the two MP's Stephen Mosley and Graham Evans should be involved.

The Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge carries the A56 over the Weaver at Frodsham, is used by 20,000 vehicles a day and is the only road crossing the river for miles in either direction.
