Dredging causes dead fish

WHAT could be a great set-back to dredging the waterways, is that is has caused dead fish in Aylesbury Basin.

It was suspended when the amount of dead fish increased dramatically, with oxygen having to be pumped into the water to save the remaining fish.

Floating dredger

British Waterways used a floating dredger to dredge Aylesbury Basin, but stirred up a mix that took the oxygen away causing the fish to asphyxiate and rise to the surface.

Local fishing clubs blamed British Waterways for dredging at this time of year, stating it should have done it in winter when there is more oxygen in the water. There are now hundreds of dead fish floating and rotting on the water, with an attempt being made to clear them.
