Doubts about more Kelpies

THERE are plans to erect another pair of Kelpies—the 30ft horse heads at the Falkirk Wheel—on a proposed lift bridge at Grangemouth, but there is opposition to the development.

Falkirk Council officials believe the development of a lift bridge and the sculptures would cause traffic chaos, with a decision to be made in early November.

It was the two Kelpies on the Forth & Clyde Canal at the Falkirk Wheel, shown in Alan Tilbury's photograph, that caused the interest in having another two at the proposed lift bridge, with the horses heads nodding as the bridge moves, but there is a great deal of opposition to the development of the bridge over the Forth & Clyde Canal.

It was stated that the bridge would take no more than five minutes to rise and fall, but it was pointed out that this depended on the boats passing underneath, and the traffic problems it would cause.

It is also proposed to create a new arm to the canal, taking it under the M9 Motorway, where the two Kelpies would be constructed as part of a new sea lock.
