First picture of new Long Horse Bridge

Published: Wednesday, 03 August 2011

THIS is the first picture of the new Long Horse Bridge being prepared for lifting over the Trent at Derwent Mouth.

Work is at present proceeding on the bridge, with welding taking place under the far covered section, and when all is complete the whole bridge will be lifted over the Trent, scheduled for next Tuesday.

The above picture shows where the curved section will be bolted onto the bank in two places, with the straight section, the floor of the bridge, resting on  the concrete pillar, shown below.  The same at the opposite bank of the river.

Instead of the bridge being for pedestrians only as the former bridge, this will be of dual purpose for both pedestrians and horses, with a bridle path being created at both sides of the river.

When eventually opened, once again access will be available from the Trent & Mersey Canal down to Sawley.
