No cash to spare for restoration

MONEY needed to restore a stretch of waterway and build a new basin in Whitchurch was refused at this week's annual meeting of Whitchurch Town Council.

The Whitchurch Waterway Trust wants to extend the canal and create a new basin with moorings in the town, but this cannot go ahead after councillors refused to help fund the project, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Already given money

At the meeting it was stated the council had already given the trust money in the past, but had not had any evidence of what it had been used for, with Councillor Ticker Harris telling that money  had been given before, and he didn't see why more should be thrown at them.

Councillor Peggy Mullock, the newly-elected mayor of Whitchurch, proposed the council ask the trust to send details on what had happened to the money previously given.

The trust's project was to extend the waterway further towards the town centre in the future using locks or an inclined plane.
