IT WAS WAY BACK IN JANUARY that Ware Lock 2 on the Lee Navigation was closed.
It trapping 13 boats, Keith Gudgin reports.
Closed the lock
These boats wanted to travel downstream, mostly to their moorings, but were unable to as the Environment Agency had closed the lock to navigation.
It being stated at that time:
Following this initial phase the EA will review the condition of the lock gates to assess the effectiveness of the controlled openings and determine if some form of assisted passage can be offered.
Did not happen
With boats still being stuck by the closed lock, this obviously did not happen.
But now we are told that the current navigation closure will remain in place until 10th July. The EA are actively developing a controlled plan to allow limited boat movements during this period. This will be a controlled opening to enable movement for approximately 13 boats that need to travel downstream.
The trapped boaters are obviously hoping that this time the agency will be true to its promise.
