Four canals closed yesterday

Published: Thursday, 23 November 2023

THERE was a total of four stoppages yesterday, Wednesday.

Rochdale Canal

The Rochdale is closed between Lock 21 and 22 caused by a drained pound and another pound very low, Keith Gudgin reports.

So providing not a leak, this should be sorted sometime today.

Llangollen Canal

The Llangollen is closed yet again by the failure of Wrenbury Lift Bridge, the second time this month.

But told that the team is working to resolve the issue.

South Stratford Canal

The third stoppage in on the South Stratford that could be serious as a recent inspection has shown both a section of towpath and navigation to be unsafe.

This is between Bridge 63 and Bridge 64, with the navigation closed immediately.

Birmingham & Fazeley

Finally yesterday, it is the Birmingham & Fazeley that is closed by a sunken boat, but not caught in a lock as is usual.

This time the boat has sunk in the pound between Drayton Swing Bridge & Drayton Brick Bridge, closing the waterway.

We are told the reactive response team attempted to lift out the boat today, Thursday, but unfortunately were unable to do so.

This situation has now been assessed and efforts are being made to contact the owner.

UPDATE—the South Stratford has had its bank secured and the navigation open. The Birmingham & Fazeley should have the sunken boat raised today and the canal open.
