A STOLEN van was discovered with its engine still running in the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

This was in Blackburn, with concern that there might be someone trapped inside the partially submerged vehicle, Alan Tilbury reports.

May have been trapped

Emergency services were alerted with a water rescue team, life boat and air support unit attending to search the water for any people who may have been trapped or injured.

A spokesperson for the fire service told that when they arrived it was found the van had its engine still running, hence the worry that someone may be trapped inside.

Stolen and dumped

However, no one was discovered in the vehicle and it was soon discovered that it had been stolen and obviously just dumped in the canal.
