Dredging a necessity

THE lack of dredging of the Wey at Godalming last winter caused terrible flooding that ruined many homes, so it really was necessary to prevent it happening again.

As the river flooded, the town was badly affected with around 70 homes flooded and power cuts to add to the misery, Alan Tilbury tells us.

£1 million

But now, the Environment Agency has dredged the 'pinch points' of the river, also clearing away branches and trees at a cost of £1 million.

It was not only Godalming that was affected, but a further 160 houses were flooded in Guildford and Cranleigh.
