Towpaths for WRG

Published: Friday, 25 October 2013

FOR 40 years the Waterways Recovery Group (WRG) has been undertaking sterling work on the restoration and maintenance of the canals, but has broken away from this traditional role to undertake resurfacing and widening of towpaths.

From this coming Sunday 27th October, for the following week, volunteers of the WRG will spend their time resurfacing, widening and in some places straightening around one mile of towpath on the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation, between Sandford Mill Lock & Bourne Lock.

Safer passage

Volunteers will start the week by clearing overgrown vegetation along the towpath before using an excavator, dumpers and shovels to start the main repairs and resurfacing work. Volunteers will also spend time clearing obstructions in the water along this stretch of the navigation. It is hoped the work of the volunteers will create a more enjoyable and safer passage for boaters, pedestrians and cyclists.

This is one of the many annual camps organised by the WRG, that more normally undertakes work on the restoration of the waterways.
