The dreaded seal is back

MUCH to the annoyance of anglers, the seal nicknamed Keith, is back devouring their fish stocks in the Severn.

It caused a furore amongst anglers last year, who wanted to shoot it, but that in turn caused another furore with fans setting up Facebook and Twitter accounts to save the seal—and they succeeded, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Celebrity status

It was thought the female seal had swum from the Irish sea to take up residence in the Severn, earning itself a celebrity status, but as it was not sighted after the winter, it was thought she had died.

But she is back, living—as nature intended—on fish, but there has been no attempt by angling clubs to apply for permission to shoot it.  The seal has been spotted a number of times in the river around Worcester, with people once again taking up Keith spotting.

It was the huge campaign, Save Keith The Seal, that received worldwide support that prevented Keith—it was so named before it was discovered to be a female—from being killed.
