Another try for basin

ANOTHER try is being made to convert a car park in Oxford city centre into a basin to accommodate boats.

This was last attempted in 2008, but was thwarted through both lack of money and Nuffield College not wanting to give up its parking space.

Local boaters

Local boaters want the basin, that was used as a wharf, but was filled in way back in 1937, then given to the college, then eventually used for car parking.

There is little chance of this happening, as even Oxford Council, that leases the space from Nuffield College is against the scheme.  And there is little money to spare by Canal & River Trust, whose spokesman stated it had already carried out a certain amount of technical investigatory work and talked to both councils about it. But would have to be seen as part of a comprehensive redevelopment.
