Lock gates shock

Published: Wednesday, 16 January 2013

MEMBERS of the Grantham Canal Society were delighted when the new top gates were fitted to lock 18, but that soon faded when it was realised the bottom gates were is a worse condition than realised.

The top gates were installed in June to further progress the restoration of the Grantham Canal, but each time the lock was filled the water escaping from the bottom gates grew worse, with the members devastated to realise that they too had to be replaced, as they were not safe to use.

At cost price

The problem was that these would cost in the region of £58,000 to replace, far beyond the society's means.  But Chairman, Mike Stone, approached Hargreaves, who manufactured and installed the top gates and due to a postponed order elsewhere they made an offer that could not be refused—the gates at cost price, that reduces the cost considerably.

So the members are again being approached to make a donation, and, even if a small one, it could help buy the gates and even have them installed later this year.

Donation

Already just over 50% of the cost has been raised, and should anyone feel inclined to help to have the Grantham Canal restored once again they can make a donation by clicking on the link.

(Note there is no ‘www'). This will take you to the home page where half way down on the right is ‘Donate to Charity'. Enter GCS in the box which will take you to the next page with five other entries, each relating to the word ‘Canal'. The one is the first entry. Click on the donate box and all will be self explanatory. At this point you don't have to make a donation but the society hopes you will.
