THE roots of canal transport will be celebrated at the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port next week-end  with the Horses At Work event.

Heavy horses will be visiting the museum to give a demonstration of horse-drawn canal boating on Sunday 7th August, with visitors also being able to see costumed performances, a harnessing demonstration, traditional leather work display and a photographic exhibition. The photograph show Bonny about to pull a boat.

Horse whispering

For youngsters there will be pony rides available from the Parkgate Pony Sanctuary—that will also be demonstrating the ancient art of horse whispering.

Marketing manager Oliver Briscoe explained:

"We established this event last year and it will be bigger and better this Sunday. It's a real link back to the early history of canals—after all, the stables at the museum are among the oldest buildings in Ellesmere Port.

"The museum will be being brought to life and there will be plenty for visitors to see and do—both enthusiasts and families will have a great day out at this atmospheric event."

The museum has a regular summer programme of events for families. Additionally visitors can see an exhibition of canal linocut art by Eric Gaskell and crochet work by the museum's  group.
