THE WELFORD ARM of the Grand Union Canal is to be closed.
This will occur tomorrow, Friday 7th November, Keith Gudgin reports.
It is down to the summer drought with Welford, Sulby and Naseby reservoirs no longer having enough reservoir storage to feed into the Welford Arm.
The picture shows when the lock on the Welford Arm had too much water!
Must now be rested
Canal & River Trust state the reservoirs must now be rested with the hope that they will start to refill over the winter months, it adding that the Welford Arm, from Welford Lock 1, will be closed from 3pm tomorrow, Friday 7th November.
This is as it is currently unable to maintain sufficient water levels for navigation without the reservoir feed, but when there is sufficient inflow into the Arm from such as local streams to sustain navigation, it will be reopened.
