OVER TWO WEEKS after the closure of the Ashton Canal and now told a design has been developed.

Ashton18This refers to the closure if the Ashton Canal on the 1st of October, Keith Gudgin reports.

This was caused, it was told, as its Lock 18 has its balance beam separated from the lock gate, making the lock inoperable.  Photograph by Pennine Waterways.

Positive step forward

The developed design is to repair the lock gate heel, and told that while this is a positive step forward, as the lock is a designated heritage asset, our heritage team are now obtaining permission from the local heritage authority before we can proceed with the works.

So the lock remains inoperable until this permission is obtained, but an update is promised for Friday 31st October.
