THE RAINFALL is continuing to allow the navigations to be open.

But alas the continuing lack of maintenance is still closing them, as Keith Gudgin reports.

Ashton Canal

This time it in the Ashton Canal that is closed as its Lock 18 has its balance beam separated from the lock gate, making the lock inoperable.

As is now usual the team are now working on a plan for a method of repair.

James Forgill noting the condition of this lock tells:

Time for maintenance

"This navigation was closed during the summer of little rainfall, and using the time for maintenance would have seen the condition of this lock and repaired it then.

But maintenance of a 200 years old plus canal does not seem necessary these days."
