Emergency closure on Wigan Flight until February

ONCE again the Wigan Flight is closed, this time until February.

The apron of the cill of Lock 73 on the Wigan Flight is fractured which will need to be removed and a replacement constructed, resulting in Lock 73 of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal flight being closed. Keith Gudgin reports.

The work to repair this is scheduled to take place from Tuesday 2nd January 2024 at 7am until Friday 2nd February at 6pm.This means the flight will be closed for eight weeks.

The good news

Though there are now two stoppages on the Leeds & Liverpool, the work are told is progressing well at Wanless Bridge (145) on the Leeds & Liverpool canal, as contractors are ahead of schedule. Canal & River Trust confirm that navigation will resume next week on the afternoon of Friday 15th December.
