Cholmondeston Lock sinking caused by caught rudder

OUR Victor was wrong in his assumption that the sunk boat [in Cholmondeston Lock] had hung up on the cill, writes Linda Edwards.

In fact the boat was ascending the lock but got its rudder pinned between the bottom gates.

Resulted in fatality

A similar incident elsewhere on the system a couple of years ago resulted in a fatality. Luckily, nobody was hurt on this occasion.

River Canal Rescue were on site before 8am, with pollution containment measures in use and pumps at the ready, and the boat was quickly and efficiently refloated and removed from the lock.
