IT WAS the leakage from Stenson's Lock on the Erewash Canal that drained the pound above making it unavigable.

With engineers then expected to attend sometime this week in an attempt to resolve the matter, Keith Gudgin reports.

Log removed

Eventually the engineers arrived but all it was, it is told, was a log which was removed because it was impeding closure of the top gate paddles. (How it impeded the operation of two paddles is not explained.)

Neither is it explained why the other gates and their closed paddles did not stop water escaping and so the pound being drained.

The water level in the pound between lock 72 and lock 71 is now back to normal and the canal reopen to navigation.
