ACCORDING to Canal & River Trust Wigan Flight should reopen by the end of this week.
The stoppage was caused by a blown cill on Lock 69 on the 14th of June, Keith Gudgin reports.
At that time we were told the work would take three weeks, but finding a sink hole has delayed this, so the work will have eventually closed the Leeds & Liverpool for over five weeks.
70 tonnes of silt removed
Altogether 70 tonnes of silt were removed from the lock chamber, with work now being done on the cill apron, then the equipment will be removed to allow the lock to reopen tomorrow, Friday.
It is expected that volunteers will be on hand to help the many boaters held up to negotiate the flight.
