Mass exodus from Calder & Hebble

Published: Thursday, 14 January 2016

OUR boat was one of those that had to be rescued by River Canal Rescue after the floods on the Calder & Hebble, and we must congratulate the rescue people on a good job once they got around to our boat, being of course in a queue, writes Pauline Grimes.

But I can tell you there is now a mass exodus from the Calder & Hebble, and from what my husband has been told the Aire & Calder as well, as it is obvious that from now on floods will be the norm.

No blame

This time it is no use blaming Canal & River Trust as no one could have done anything about the amount of water that came down and subsequent floods on the rivers and canals here in the North.

We are looking for somewhere more safe to moor our narrowboat; somewhere I can assure you that will have no connection with any river, and we hear others are doing the same. It is just a matter of somewhere convenient, but with the Rochdale and Leeds & Liverpool canals also suffering and the Huddersfield Narrow always being closed, it is either towards a summit somewhere or like our friends, further South.

We live near Bradford, and if any of your readers know of a secure mooring away from the floods we would be pleased to hear.
