Not impressed with RCR

JUST how good is River & Canal Rescue (RCR)? Is it worth its subscription? asks Gary Doswell.

Alarm sounded

I started my engine to charge my batteries and after half an hour the ignition alarm sounded. I cut the engine and on investigation found that the main crank shaft drive pulley had come off of the crank shaft end.

It is a Beta Marine 43 and has done 4811 hours. It has a starter alternator, a domestic alternator and a travel power alternator. I slackened the alternators and removed the belts, the main pulley was easy to lift out of the engine bay. I found the woodruff key and retaining nut under the engine.

Not a DIY job

Realising this was not a DIY mechanic job I called RCR at just about noon. We are members of seven years plus and only one query in that time, no call outs.

About 1400 mechanic turned up, took photos, told needed more tools and that another mechanic or someone will ring when available within a couple of hours.

About three hours later at 1700, feeling somewhat neglected rang RCR and was answered by original operator (Abie?) who said would get the operator who was dealing with problem to ring with up-date.

Four hours later

Nearly four hours later, about 2045 rang RCR to find out what was happening and to register dismay at lack of ringbacks . He would contact mechanic who would contact us and sort out problem.

About 2115, it is getting gloomy and still no call-back, and a bit late for possibly drilling on boats considering we have no 230v power. Engine bay was all open and still no ring-back. I rang RCR to inform them that I was unimpressed with the service and was going for a meal at the pub and would be turning my phone off as I do not take my phone when I go out.

No results

So no result as to getting engine working and no ideas as to when anyone (mechanic or otherwise) will come to fix it. Saturday, Sunday or Monday? Anyone's guess.

I ask again is RCR subscription worth it?

Is it so hard to make a call and ring a member to let them know when someone might be able to help them? Or are we members just mushrooms, best kept in the dark and fed on bullshit!

Gary Doswell Nb The Answer. Motionless and quiet. Living in hope.
